New bushfire firefighters for District 11

The next fire season may seem like a long way off we have to get through winter first  but when it arrives District 11 willl have 11 new bushfire firefighters from six brigades ready for the fireground.

New members from Mossi-Tambo, Toorloo, Metung, Glenaladale, Bruthen and Lakes Entrance brigades completed their Bushfire Firefighters course in the first week of May.

The course was held over three nights and one weekend at a number of stations. Thanks to those brigades who made their shed and facilities available.

Thanks to the captain of Toorloo brigade, Wayne Johnston, who did all the behind-the-scenes work to get things off the ground and make it happen.

The participants showed great enthusiasm and approached the exercise with refreshing energy. They might not be on the next plane to Canada, but all are keen to start turning out to local jobs and perhaps take part in a strike team next summer.

Thanks also to members from other brigades who pitched in to generally help out and take part in the essential, but necessary, final assessment.

Tambo Group hopes to offer four courses each year if there are sufficient numbers. Members from adjoining groups are more than welcome to take part as well.

A group photo of the 'graduates' was taken in the drizzling rain which, during the day, ensured outdoor activities were a little damp.
