Members of the Narre Warren Fire Brigade will be donning a homemade ‘running fire engine’ at this year’s Run for the Kids event, to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital.
The running fire engine concept was developed and built by members Tony Bundock, Karen Bundock, Rob Beard and Peter Green.
The team are regular runners and wanted to raise money for charity while promoting the local fire brigade.
Tony said he was inspired by a similar design which was built by a firefighter in the UK at St Mary’s, Southampton.
“I reached out to the St Mary’s team; they were incredibly helpful and sent across plans of their running fire engine for our Narre Warren team to use,” he said.
“We worked out what we needed and approached Bunnings, The Printed Shade Cloth Company and Snedz Fit Studio. They generously provided us with parts and donations to make the running fire engine possible.
“We then got to work in my garage and made the frame out of plastic pipe and printed the canvas.
“We fitted the harnesses and that was it; we’ll explore how we might be able to attach flashing lights on the front of it to complete it ahead of the run.”

“We all run quite frequently but we won’t be eyeing off any personal bests for this run,” Tony said.
“It’ll be a bit of fun for us to get involved with a goal of making it to the finish line.”
The brigade has set an ambitious fundraising target of $10,000 for the cause, and encouraged fellow CFA members and willing donors to contribute in the lead up to the event.
“This is all for a worthwhile cause. We are so lucky to have a world-class facility like the Royal Children’s Hospital but we know these things don’t run on air, we need to do everything we can to support it,” Tony said.
“It’s a cause that will be close to many Victorians’ hearts so if we can support it in a meaningful way then we will.”
