First Total Fire Ban of the season in the Mallee

CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson has declared the first Total Fire Ban of the 2014/15 fire season in the Mallee District.

High temperatures and completely dry vegetation in Victoria's northwest has seen the Bureau of Meteorology forecast a severe fire danger rating in the district tomorrow.

CFA State Duty Officer Peter Lucas said residents and visitors to the region in particular needed to heed the warnings.

"Any open fire in the district tomorrow is strictly forbidden - that includes campfires and burnoffs," Mr Lucas said.

"After months of below average rainfall, the Fire danger Period has already begun in parts of the northwest. The latest grassland curing map shows vegetation is completely cured and ready to burn." (See attached picture).

Mr Lucas said the earlier than usual fire danger was a wake up call across the state for residents in high risk areas to get their properties ready for a long and dangerous summer.
