Last week, Broadwater Fire Brigade opened its station doors and turned out its truck for a humbling reason.
Each year, Camp Quality, a children’s family cancer charity, runs a camp in Hamilton for a few days, which is organised by the Macarthur Lion’s Club.
These camps allow kids affected by cancer and their siblings from all across the state, to come out to the country and take part in local experiences in south-west Victoria.
One of the activities organised this year was a morning at a local farm near Macarthur.
The 30 kids aged between 7 and 12 years old, got up close with a variety of animals, saw sheep being hand shorn and baked some damper. The kids got to check out a fire truck which, for most, was for the first time.
CFA members helped them spray water, take them for a ride (with support from Hawkesdale Fire Brigade) and allowed them to test the siren.
Captain Koala also made an appearance – giving the kids an opportunity to take CK selfies!
The brigade has been involved in this annual event for 15 years. Broadwater Fire Brigade Captain Hugh Macfarlane has long been a proactive supporter of it and firmly believes “making even one kid smile brightens your worst day”.
