A Tribute to Ginge

As the beaches of sunny Queensland beckon to Assistant Chief Officer Mike Wassing, one of his last requests for Metcalfe Group was to have D. Graham (Ginge) Wait’s medals framed.

DG Wait affectionately known as ‘Ginge’ was a stalwart member of Metcalfe Fire Brigade and his community.  He gave more than 50 years’ service to Metcalfe Fire Brigade including 27 years as captain six years as Metcalfe Fire Brigade Chairman.

Ginge worked tirelessly for his community and along with the fire brigade he also volunteered with the various organisations including the Metcalfe Hall Committee, Landcare, Metcalfe Tractor Pull and Green Hill Cemetery Trust.  Ginge’s long history with Metcalfe Fire Brigade gave him a vast wealth of experience which he was more than willing to share with the greater CFA membership.

Unfortunately Ginge passed away last year before his well-earned medals could be presented to him. At the Metcalfe Fire Brigade awards dinner in June Ginge’s family received the National Emergency Medal and National Medal from CFA Board Member Michael Tudball. ASO Mike Wassing presented CFA Life Membership.  As a parting gesture to Ginge’s family the awards were framed.

His sister Dorothy Smith proudly received his medals and but commented that Ginge himself would have wondered “what all the fuss was about”.
