CFA values and honours exceptional contributions to protecting lives and property. You now have the opportunity to nominate members for the prestigious Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM).
CFA is in the process of consolidating AFSM nominations for the Australia Day Honours 2023.
Due Date: 1 May 2022 (CFA closing date)
The Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) recognises distinguished service by members of fire services agencies across Australia. In Victoria, this means a member of the following fire service agencies, as defined in the State Emergency Management Plan: Country Fire Authority, Fire Rescue Victoria and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.
Introduced in 1988, the medal is awarded twice a year on Australia Day and the Queen's Birthday in recognition of distinguished service by a member of an Australian fire service.
The AFSM is awarded by the Governor-General on the recommendation of the responsible Commonwealth, state and territory ministers. In Victoria, this is the Minister for Emergency Services, acting on behalf of the Premier of Victoria.
Anyone can put forward a nomination for someone they know who deserves to be honoured. To nominate, visit the awards section of Members Online and download the nomination form (recently updated). All nominations are strictly confidential.
Recent CFA recipients include John Clarke, Graeme Higgs and Gillian Metz.
Please refer to the CFA Honours and Awards Nominator’s Guide for assistance on how to determine the most appropriate award, the importance of aligning the written nomination of a person to the criteria for the selected award, and finally, some guidance around the content of your nomination, so that the nominee has the best opportunity to be considered for special recognition.
