An exhausted, inspired and very humbled Allan Rankin has recently returned from a 9 day bike ride, all the in the name of cancer research. (See previous story here)
Late last year CFA District 10 Operations Manager Allan Rankin decided that he could no longer sit back and helplessly watch the devastating effects that cancer was having on his community; so he decided to do something about it.
On Friday, 24 March, Allan and his fellow Tour de Cure riders embarked on the ride of a life time to raise funds and awareness for cancer research.
The riders wove their way through South East Victoria before jumping on the Spirit of Tasmania and pedalling down the East Coats of Tasmania.
Allan not only smashed his fundraising target raising over $16,700 for the cause but he was also presented with the overall Green Jersey for raising awareness of Tour de Cure at the final night dinner at Swansea.
“I was honoured and humbled to receive the Green Jersey for raising awareness across CFA and our community,” he said.
Tour de Cure riders approached their final destination with a Police escort over the Tasman Bridge, through the city and on to Parliament House in Hobart. They were greeted with a crowd of hundreds of smiling faces, colourful banners and loud cheering.
“It was an incredibly special moment with a multitude of feelings also bittersweet given the circumstances that brought me to this cause and this event,” said Allan.
“This has been one of the most amazing, challenging and emotional experiences I have been involved in and I am thankful for the generous support, encouragement and overwhelming amount of money that people have donated to this important cause.
“Thank you seems too little but I sincerely appreciate it and genuinely thank everyone for the support.
“The challenge to find a cure for cancer goes on and, we've all made a positive and significant contribution to the cause.”
Although the Tour has finished it’s not too late to donate to the cause.
