Alpine community engagement

Engaging with the community is a key strategy CFA uses to reduce fire risk and increase community preparedness. This becomes especially important when you consider the high number of visitors during a busy winter season in the state’s alpine regions.

“In winter, we have a massive increase in people on the mountain. There are 20,000 beds across Mt Hotham alone,” CFA’s Alpine Commander Mark Owens explains.

He added that if you take into account a busy weekend where car parking is full, all the beds are full, there is an increased fire risk, and it is important that the community understands fire safety messaging.

The bulk of this work occurs at the beginning of the ski season, with CFA hosting fire safety sessions with key stakeholders.
