Anakie fundraiser nets $5K

A tin rattle in January has collected almost $5000 for Anakie Fire Brigade.

The brigade and its local Bunnings store in North Geelong, has raised the most cash as part of an Australia Day fundraiser, held across the state.

The barbecue fundraiser at Bunnings North Geelong brought in $2332 for the brigade, while members who were shaking tins on the day raised $2486.

Anakie Fire Brigade Captain David Gillett says the money will be used to help fund the purchase of the brigade’s first Slip On vehicle, expected to join their fleet later this year.

“We’re very excited. It was a great day, a hot day, and an enormous effort put in by the Bunnings staff, which couldn’t have been more helpful,” David said.

“The amount we raised amazed me. People were pulling a lot out of their wallets.

“They were stopping and buying a sausage; they were emptying their pockets on the way in and emptying their pockets on the way out.”

David said the Slip On vehicle, which would be jointly funded by CFA, the State Government and the brigade would add another dimension to the brigade’s firefighting capability.

The brigade boasts two Tankers, including one that is brigade-owned, and a Field Command Vehicle.

He said the brigade looked forward to its next fundraiser, another partnership with Bunnings, which would be held this month.
