Anakie hay fire to burn for days

CFA members are patrolling a large hayshed fire at Anakie which has burnt more than 1,500 hay bales and is expected to burn for days.

CFA Duty Officer Geoff McGill said crews quickly called in for support once they saw the size of the fire after arriving at the Geelong-Ballan Road property around 8pm Sunday.

“They’ve seen the severity of the fire, which had already engulfed the hayshed, and they turned their attention to protecting surrounding assets,” he said.

“Nearby grain silos and shedding is undamaged.

“The hayshed is quite large, around 60x60 metres containing 6,000 tonnes of hay.

“Unfortunately an antique fire truck and some farm machinery was also destroyed.

“It’s a devastating loss for the owner who has already been trying to organise replacement stock feed.”

It took 10 crews around four hours to contain the blaze however it is still not under control.

One crew remained on scene overnight and continues to patrol the fire ground.

Mr McGill said the fire is expected to burn for at least a few more days, if not weeks.

“We ask residents to be aware that there will likely be smoke about during this time, but not to worry,” he said.

The fire is being treated as suspicious with Victoria Police on scene and a fire investigator to attend later today.

Crews from Anakie, Lara, Corio, Little River and Maude attended.
