A bar heater that was left too close to a bed was the cause of a house fire in Ronald Street, Dandenong last week (13 July).
The fire broke out at about 11.15am Thursday morning and crews arrived on scene shortly after.
CFA firefighters from Dandenong, Rowville and Hallam worked with MFB to get the fire under control.
CFA Rostered Duty Officer Paul Carrigg said there was one person in the house at the time who was alerted to the fire when he smelled smoke.
“The house was 80 per cent involved when the first fire crew arrived, the street and surrounding streets were filled with black smoke,” Mr Carrigg said.
“The fire was under control after about fifteen minutes and 90 percent put out after half an hour.
“The black heavy smoke from the fire hung around more than usual in the surrounding streets, potentially due to the weather conditions.
“It is important that all fire hazards are kept at least one metre away from all heating devices.”
A neighbour was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation at the scene.
Police were also in attendance.
