Bitumen truck fire at Port Fairy

CFA remains on scene where a truck caught fire at Port Fairy this afternoon.

Crews were called to the incident on a dirt track about 30 metres from the Princes Highway about 4.20pm, where a small truck carrying 1000 litres of bitumen had caught fire.

It took around 30 minutes to bring the fire under control and the truck has been destroyed. Firefighters are continuing work on cooling the bitumen to ensure the site is safe.

Operations Officer Richard Bourke said crews also had to deal with an exploding gas bottle on the truck and have conducted a flare-off.

He said there have been some disruptions to traffic along the highway and advised people in the area to check the VicRoads website for the latest information.

Fortunately no-one was injured in the incident.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
