The station, a $2.1 million investment by the Victorian Government, is expected to be completed in July 2018.

The station will be a modern 3 bay drive through, with a large meeting room, amenities and Brigade and District office. It will also include turnout change rooms, workshops and protective equipment and storage facilities.

The new station will be built on the spot of the current station on Fisher Street. During construction the Portarlington Fire Brigade will operate out of a former church building on the corner of Fenwick and Harding Street.

Portarlington’s population has risen to approximately 3500 permanent residents, and increases to in excess of 20,000 during major events and during the summer holiday period.

The Portarlington Fire Brigade has been serving the local community and surrounding region for over 68 years.

Brigade Captain Darren Nisbet said the entire brigade was ecstatic about the new station.

“It’s a big win for us. It’s a fantastic result, not only for our Brigade members but also for the community. It’s been a positive process getting to this point, and the Brigade thanks the community for their continuing support” he said.

Assistant Chief Officer for South West Region Rohan Luke said there had been rapid population growth on the Bellarine Peninsula, and the new station would enhance community safety.

“Population in Portarlington and on the Bellarine have grown significantly over the last few years. This new station will help ensure we have the necessary resources to provide a quality service to the community,” he said.
