Busy weekend for brigades

This uncharacteristically warm Grand Final weekend has proven to be a busy one for CFA crews with 62 vegetation fires on Saturday alone.

Over the last two weeks there has been virtually no rainfall across the state, and this early burst of warm weather is a sign of 'El Nino' settling in.

"This is a very real reminder to all Victorians to start preparing their properties now", said CFA Deputy Chief Officer Alen Slijepcevic.

"If people are burning off excess vegetation on their properties before the Fire Danger Period commences, they should always check conditions and register their burn-offs with the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority by calling 1800 668 511,” he said.

“You should never burn-off in hot, dry, or windy conditions, and when the burn off is complete the ground should be cool to touch; the same goes for putting out campfires.

"Whether you live in a city, town or rural area, it's always important to check the Fire Danger Ratings for your area or where you're travelling to, and don't forget to check if Total Fire Bans apply.

"Stay safe this summer by being informed and preparing now."
