Camper rescued after tree falls on tent

Firefighters have helped with the delicate rescue of a camper who became trapped by a fallen tree in Kennett River overnight.

CFA crews were called to the campsite on the Great Ocean Road around 1am.

Apollo Bay firefighter Leah Beamish said crews arrived to find a woman in her 60s trapped by the legs.

“We used airbags to pack under the tree – which was quite large - and gradually inflate until we could free her,” she said.

“Crews worked really well together to keep the woman calm.

“Once she was freed she was treated by paramedics who were also on site.”

The rescue took approximately 40 minutes.

The woman’s partner was also in the tent at the time of the incident but was uninjured.
