Four CFA pumpers responded to a house fire in Drysdale shortly after 5am this morning, which caused significant damage to part of a large double storey home.
Fire investigators are currently on scene working to determine the cause of the blaze, which started in a car parked in a garage, spreading to the carport structure then into the adjoining house, causing the carport roof and ceiling of one of the bedrooms to collapse.
Ocean Grove Station Officer Adam Shearer said that firefighters had arrived to find the car and carport well alight, with the fire extending into two rooms of the house.
“One of the challenges for firefighters at this incident was that the car was parked close to the fuse box, which made it hard to isolate power. The house had solar panels installed which also made isolating power difficult,” Adam said.
“The owner told us that he had been woken by a beeping sound, which must have been the car shorting out as fire took hold.
“Following that he heard a large bang as the car became well alight.
“Being such a large house, it was a good save to confine the fire to only two rooms, and that was down to the efforts of the crews that attended,” said Adam.
Firefighters from Drysdale, Ocean Grove and Wallington took about 50 minutes to bring the fire under control.
