Cars crash on icy alpine road

CFA crews assisted Victoria Police, SES and Ambulance to rescue seven people after two separate crashes on the Great Alpine Road this morning (10 July).

Just after 8am crews were called to the Great Alpine Road at Cobungra, where a car, carrying five people, was located around four metres down an embankment.

The five passengers were transported to hospital by bus.

In a separate crash, a vehicle carrying two people also landed down the embankment a short time later, just metres from the other car.

Its two passengers were helped out of the vehicle by ambulance crews and transported to hospital by air ambulance.

CFA Operations Manager Brett Boatman said the road was extremely icy.

“It wasn’t snowing, but it had rained and there was water frozen on the surface of the road.

“With the weather set to worsen in the next few days, this is a reminder to take care on the roads.”

Trucks from Omeo and Swifts Creek attended.
