A fire burning in huge piles of almond husks at a processing factory at Carwarp, near Mildura, is expected to burn for several days.
More than 20 CFA crews, including a large ladder platform truck, were called to the large fire around 10:30pm last night, and worked throughout the night to contain the blaze. It was brought under control around 6.45am.
Fire crews did an outstanding job of containing the fire to the mounds of around 100,000 tonnes of almond husks, of which more than half were saved. A nearby processing plant was also saved from significant damage.
Firefightes remained on scene until midday before handing the site back to management to monitor.
More than 100 firefighters from 11 brigades including Irymple, Ouyen, Robinvale, Swan Hill, Mildura, Red Cliff, Bendigo, Nangiloc, Merbein, Carwarp and Werrimull battled the fire.
Fire investigators have visited the scene with early indications suggesting the fire may be the result of spontaneous combustion.
