Firefighters were called to a garage fire that caused a looming dark cloud of smoke over the property

Mooroolbark Fire Brigade were met by an ominous dark cloud when they responded to a garage fire last week.

The brigade’s Captain, Mark Drennan said, “Upon our arrival, I could see a plume of dark smoke rising.”

“Fortunately, the family and their beloved pet dog had already safely evacuated.”

The fire on Parry Drive, Mooralbark was called in at 8.30am last Wednesday, with Montrose Fire Brigade, Bayswater Fire Brigade, Warrandyte Fire Brigade, Fire Rescue Victoria, and Ambulance Victoria also attending the scene.

The structure was already engulfed in flames when firefighters showed up, with the floor above the garage already collapsed.

Doing a quick scope around the house, firefighters determined that it was unsafe to enter through the front and had to enter from the back to bring the fire under control.

“The steep nature of the property also made things tricky as we had a ladder platform but were unable to use it,” Captain Drennan said.

After an hour, the fire was finally brought under control with exhausted firefighters being looked after by their Ambulance Victoria colleagues.

The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.
