A man who became stuck in a silo yesterday at a property near Bendigo was rescued in a multi-agency effort, led by CFA.
The man, in his 50s, was trapped in a silo for several hours before emergency services were called to the Axe Creek property around 4.15pm yesterday (10 February).
It took a team of people from CFA, Ambulance Victoria, SES and Victoria Police to pull the man from the silo, before being transported by air to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
District 2 Operations Manager Trent McKinnon said the rescue was a fantastic example of agencies working together.
“He was conscious and breathing when crews arrived. He was standing in the silo, but there was a great deal of pressure from the grain around him.
“There was air in the silo; it was not a toxic atmosphere, although it was very, very hot in there.
“Dehydration was a concern seeing as though he had been stuck for a few hours prior to emergency services arriving.
“Another concern was that he could potentially be crushed by the grain.
“The rescue crews were able to secure the man inside the silo and stop the grain from putting more pressure on him.”
CFA equipment involved in the rescue included a Ladder Platform from Bendigo. The joint effort resulted in the man being pulled from the silo around 6.20pm.
“This should serve as a timely reminder to all people working in and around silos, to be vigilant, as it’s not always a good outcome.”
