CFA is introducing two training initiatives designed to increase skills in working from heights and in electrical situations.
The Low Voltage Fuse Removal (LVFR) and Safe Working from Heights (SWH) training and equipment programs will begin reaching brigades over the next few months.
In an electrical fire situation, turning off or isolating power is an important step in reducing danger.
By undertaking this training, CFA firefighters will have the capability to operate safely on fire grounds when there is an electrical issue, enabling them to attack fires prior to the arrival of an electrical professional to the scene.
This will initially reach high risk stations, before being rolled out across the state after that, with 9500 firefighters across 479 brigades being the long term target of this training.
The SWH training is a two day course that can be delivered at a limited number of sites, currently consisting of Huntly and Bangholme.
This training is another measure to increase the safety of CFA staff and volunteers, which is a priority at all times.
SWH will initially be rolled out to 160 firefighters across 32 brigades in this financial year, before a more extensive rollout after that.
For both programs, brigades will receive equipment upon completion of the training.
CFA are also working together with the MFB in conducting research into training and equipment required for responses to incidents involving solar panels and battery storage systems.
This research will come into effect in the form of trials until the 2019-20 financial year, and reflects CFA’s willingness to remain an adaptable service as solar-powered houses become more prevalent.
These projects are coming online thanks to additional funding from the State Government’s $60 million investment in CFA, courtesy of the Fire Services Statement.
