Quick thinking CFA members have come to the rescue of a puppy while attending a house fire in Leongatha on Saturday, March 18.
Crews were called to a house around midday after the residents were alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm.
CFA members entered the house in Breathing Apparatus and found the distressed puppy hiding under a bed, too scared to move.
CFA Officer in Charge Ben Patterson, who was at scene at the time, said it took a little bit of coaxing and a quick grab to rescue him.
“The puppy was a little bit scared but luckily he wasn’t injured.”
RSPCA Victoria CEO Dr Liz Walker praised the efforts of the Leongatha CFA members in rescuing the dog.
“For many people, their dogs are likely family members. Dealing with the aftermath of a house fire is traumatising enough, so I’m sure that the residents are incredibly grateful that the quick action of the brigade meant that they did not have to face the double devastation of the fire and the loss of a beloved pet”.
Mr Patterson said the fire appeared to be caused by an unattended candle in the bedroom.
“It is important to make sure candles are kept away from anything that can catch fire and are extinguished before leaving home or going to bed,” he said.
“This incident demonstrates just how effective a working smoke alarm is, not only do they provide you with early warning of a fire but they also give you time to escape safely.”
Six trucks from Leongatha and Korumburra helped get the blaze under control and save the puppy.
