CFA saves Silvan nursery

CFA crews have saved part of a large nursery complex in Silvan from being destroyed by fire last night.

Crews were called to JFT Nurseries at 7pm after reports of an office fire on Monbulk Road.

Silvan Fire Brigade Incident Controller Tim Drewitt said the first crews at the scene found the office fully alight and threatening nearby buildings.

The fire was brought under control in under an hour.

“It was great work by crews to save a neighbouring house along with the nursery’s packing shed and storage room,” he said.

“Staff were extremely grateful for what we managed to save. They’re able to get back to work and continue running their business.”

The destroyed building was around 15x10 metres in size.

“The fire produced a lot of smoke due to the amount of fibrous material burning,” he said.

“This was a fantastic save and a great team effort.”

Tim said this was the first fire of its kind in the area for at least five years.

The cause will be investigated but it is not believed to be suspicious.

A total of 15 crews attended from Frankston, Macclesfield, Monbulk, Mt Evelyn, Seville, Silvan, Wandin and Yellingbo.
