More than 75 CFA urban and rural brigades have left their mark in Mooroopna during March as the 2024 CFA/VFBV State Firefighter Championships officially come to an end.

Both weekends saw an exciting showcase of our future firefighters, with Horsham Fire Brigade’s David Hornsby gearing his juniors up, and Michele Lovett returning for her 30th year to marshall the brigades.

It was the first time participants from the Women’s Network in District 9 and 27 who were crowd favourites, heading home from the second weekend having been awarded the Outstanding Female Team.

The corporate tent was lively, featuring displays on the latest updates from many innovative CFA programs, including operational training, infrastructure and Fire Medical Response (FMR), alongside the Planned Burn Taskforce, community engagement and volunteerism teams.

The atmosphere was full of camaraderie, team spirit and determination, while an array of food and beverage trucks kept the competitors well fed, and a collection of CFA vehicles and equipment drew in many interested onlookers.

On the second weekend, the annual Torchlight Procession brought a new spark to the State Championships, as brigades marched the streets of Mooroopna with new LED powered lanterns.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan once again rallied his Chief’s Chargers for some healthy and humbling competition and said as one of our proudest and longest running traditions, it was fantastic to see hundreds of members involved.

“The State Championships are a great opportunity for our volunteers to not only engage with their peers competitively, but to develop life skills, build friendships and support like-minded regional communities.” Jason said.
