CFA is on scene at a manufacturing plant in Anakie this morning (Tuesday) where a chemical reaction has sparked an explosion.
Operations Officer Pat Geary said crews were called to Staceys Road around 7.20am and found the fire had been contained.
“It appears that chemicals were being mixed in an isolation cell which has caused a flash fire and then a substantial explosion,” he said.
“The force of that explosion has thrown pieces of equipment up to 100 metres away.
“The cell – which was being monitored by staff remotely via CCTV – has a deluge sprinkler system so the fire was able to be contained before our crews arrived.”
Mr Geary said approximately 30 workers were safely evacuated following the incident.
“We’ve been monitoring the situation over CCTV and liaising with specialist scientific officers before we enter the cell,” he said.
“Firefighters are wearing breathing apparatus and will use atmospheric monitoring equipment and thermal imaging cameras.
“We’re taking our time to make sure it’s done as safely as possible.”
There is no threat to surrounding communities.
Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and WorkSafe are also on scene.
Four crews attended from Lara and Corio.
