Chemical spill at Bacchus Marsh

CFA crews including specialist hazardous material firefighters are mopping up after a fire and chemical spill at a Bacchus Marsh abattoir.

Fourteen CFA crews were called to the factory just after 3pm, Saturday 21 March, and arrived to find a machinery fire had spread to nearby shipping containers.

“It appears the fire has melted a number of 1,000 litre plastic storage containers,” CFA District 15 Rostered Duty Officer Kade Dowie said.

“We estimated about 300 litres of chemicals has leaked but we are still assessing the situation,” Mr Dowie said.

“Ambulance Victoria are attending as a precaution and are conducting health checks of our crews to ensure our people are safe before they are released from the scene.”

“There are no injuries, and no live stock was lost.”

The incident was under control by 5.15pm.

A fire investigator is expected to arrive on scene shortly to determine a cause.
