Chocolyn Fire Brigade held a CPR and defibrillator training evening in collaboration with Ambulance Victoria on 10 May.
The brigade recently installed a defibrillator on the outside of the fire station for the benefit of the Chocolyn community, and brigade memebrs wanted to teach the local community how to save a life using it.
On 10 May many locals attended the training evening, where Ambulance Victoria paramedics demonstrated life-saving techniques including CPR and how to use a defibrillator.
“The ability to apply CPR and use a defibrillator as a bystander or first responder is particularly close to home for me,” Chocolyn Fire Brigade Secretary Leigh Harry said. “My brother, a CFA member with Gisborne Fire Brigade passed away at a fire in December 2012 following a cardiac arrest.
“So as a CFA member and also an ambulance community officer with Ambulance Victoria, I feel strongly about promoting these life-saving skills and educating the public.
“As a brigade, we are very proud to represent our community and support them in this way.”
After the training, the brigade members and community members had the opportunity to talk about what they had learned over a sausage sizzle.
