Just one week after the home fire safety campaign launch, another Victorian home has been destroyed by fire.
Shortly after 10pm last night CFA crews were called to a weatherboard house in Colac (South West Victoria), where fire engulfed 80 per cent of the property.
Volunteer crews from Colac and Cororooke fought the fire using breathing apparatus.
Police attended the scene managing traffic and onlookers, while the local SES provided lighting for CFA crews.
The power and gas companies were also called in to ensure energy sources were safe and secure.
The fire was declared under control at 10.41pm, and crews left the scene at midnight.
At this stage the cause of the fire is unknown, and is being investigated.
“This is a very real reminder to all communities across Victoria to take care at home over these colder months. Even though winter hasn’t officially started, fires in the home can start so easily and faster than you think,” said Byron Kershaw, CFA District 6 Rostered Duty Officer.
“I urge everyone to make sure their smoke alarms are working, and that the battery was replaced at the end of daylight savings in April. Fortunately these Colac residents were not at home last night, however in many fires this sadly isn’t the case.”
