CFA crews were called to reports of a fire at an underground mine in McNichols Lane in Costerfield around 3pm today (15 December).
CFA District 2 Operations Officer Chris Jacobsen confirmed a piece of machinery was on fire underground in the mine.
“We had 28 people underground at the time, who moved to a safe place while CFA crews extinguished the fire.”
The fire was called under control at 3.25pm.
“All 28 people have been accounted for; they are safe and well and have been moved to above ground,” Mr Jacobson said.
“This is a great example of the mine staff having practised an emergency plan which had a successful outcome.”
Seven crews attended from Costerfield, Heathcote, Tooborac and Bendigo.
