Chewton Fire Brigade paid a visit to Chewton Primary School this morning to teach a Fire Safe Kids lesson as part of Fire Action Week.
CFA’s education program is delivered to primary school pupils by volunteer firefighters.
The course teaches kids about the science behind fire, how to identify ‘hot spots’, how to develop a home fire escape plan and how to prepare for the bushfire season.
Victorians who live in regional or rural areas are being urged to use Fire Action Week to prepare for the coming fire season.
CFA Metcalfe Group Officer Ron Gartside said country residents - especially those who’ve made a tree change from the city - should familiarise themselves with their local fire risk.
“This week is a great time to increase your understanding of the fire risk where you live,” Mr Gartside said.
“Take the time to prepare your property, and talk to your family and friends about what you plan to do if a fire is nearby.”
The combination of recent warm weather, dry conditions and rapid rate of grassland curing has brought on this year’s fire season earlier than usual.
Victoria has already seen significant fires this year, with more than 160 fires threatening land, lives and property in the Northern Central region.
CFA firefighters responded to 1,159 grass and scrub fires across the state in the months of September and October.
Chewton Fire Brigade Captain Steve Womersley encouraged community members to talk about preparedness.
“More than 200 brigades are throwing open their doors to the public between now and December,” Mr Womersley said.
“These Open Days are a great way for locals to meet with firefighters and to learn more about how they support their community.”
“Hopefully this will assist residents in making informed decisions in the event of a fire.
“Now is the best time to understand your fire risk and get prepared, not when a fire starts.”
