A childcare centre on Tarneit Road, Tarneit has been destroyed by fire, after a car crashed in to the front of the building around 4am today (5 June).
The male driver died at the scene.
CFA firefighters had the fire under control from outside the building, however crews have not been able to go inside because the structure is unsound.
Tarneit Road will be closed between Bethany Road to Sayers Road for several hours this morning due to heavy smoke in the area.
District 14 Operations Officer Jayson Hirt advised people to avoid the area while emergency services were on scene.
“The centre will be closed and we’ll remain on scene for some time today,” Mr Hirt said.
“There’s significant damage to the building.”
Around 70 firefighters are assisting with the incident from Truganina, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee, Point Cook, Caroline Springs, Corio, Geelong City, Melton and Mount Cotterell.
