Broadford Primary School is the first in the Mitchell Shire to become officially recognised as a Fire Safe Kids school.
A title about five years in the making, Broadford Fire Brigade’s Fire Safe Kids coordinator and Community Education Officer Gaybrielle Burgess was proud to present the school with official signage recently.
“This is a major achievement and the first of its kind in this region. All the work we have put in is worth it,” Gaybrielle said.
“Giving students an education about fires and the dangers at a young age is so important and if we are getting through to the children we know we will be getting through to adults too.
“Students have a small voice but it can make a big change.”
Kilmore Fire Brigade’s Fire Safe Kids coordinator Dionne Quinn joined Gaybrielle in presenting the school with signage.
“The signage shows that schools are also about teaching valuable skills for student safety,” Dionne said.
“We have an excellent working relationship with the schools we are involved with.”
Dionne said the students are so excited to be a part of the lessons that she has even been asked by a past student to perform “stop, drop and roll” in the middle of a supermarket.
School Principal Steven Pink said the school was proud to be involved in the fire safety education of students and said it was a valuable experience.
