Despite the mild conditions today, at 12.50pm CFA crews responded to a grass fire with a reported column of smoke coming from a bluegum plantation in Williowmavin, just north-west of Kilmore and north of Melbourne.
Nine vehicles responded to the grassfire and the incident quickly escalated, with a ‘Watch and Act’ message issued for the local community.
Aircraft was initially requested, however thanks to the fast work of the responding crews from local brigades including Kilmore, Broadford, Glenaroua, Pyalong, Springfield and Wandong, the fire was brought under control within 30 minutes of the call coming in, and aircraft support was cancelled.
“Well done to all the crews involved, they did a brilliant job getting the fire under control so quickly. And the local landowners werealso well equipped and prepared to deal with this fire situation,” said Justin Dally, Roster Duty Officer District 12.
“This is also a timely reminder for all Victorians to be prepared. It’s easy to be caught off guard with this milder weather, however don’t be fooled. Fires can start and spread just as quickly if the conditions are right in milder weather too.”
“With February on our doorstop, it’s traditionally the most dangerous time for bush or grassfires in Victoria. I urge all community members to be prepared for fire, and know what to do before a fire starts. Being informed is the best way to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.”
