Geelong City Fire Brigade will trade their firefighting gear for whites and battle it out on the cricket field to raise money for disadvantaged young people in Geelong.
They will bat and bowl their way through a T20 match this Sunday, 22 March, to raise money for The Mark West Foundation which helps youth in Geelong play Australian Rules football while building on the legacy of Mark West.
In 1998, at the age of 19, Mark died as a result of a tragic on-field accident playing football.
The foundation, which carries his name, aims to provide a way for young people to play football who would otherwise be bound by financial difficulty.
Geelong City firefighter Rob Byrne encouraged the community to support the fireys playing cricket and help to raise money for the foundation.
“This is the third event like this we’ve held to raise money for not-for-profit organisations around Geelong,” he said.
“We want as many people as possible to come to the Eastern Gardens and support us in our fundraising effort.”
Funds will be raised through food including a barbecue, a range of drinks as well as through a raffle. Donations can also be made directly to the foundation.
Play starts at 1.30pm at the Eastern Gardens Cricket Oval, corner of Hold Road and Glen Avenue, East Geelong.
