Dandenong church fire

Police and CFA will investigate a suspicious fire at a catholic church in Dandenong this morning (1 April).

CFA District 8 Operations Officer Paul Carrigg said firefighers were called to the Foster Street church around 2.30am.

“We understand that one of the first callers to Triple Zero was the priest, who lives in a detached building, after allegedly hearing smoke alarms sounding,” he said.

“When firefighters arrived, they found a fire in a store room area which burnt through the floor and another fire towards the alter.

“There is extensive damage in the store room and smoke damage in the church.”

It took 40 firefighters around an hour to control the fires. It is being treated as suspicious.

Eleven crews from Dandenong, Hallam, Rowville, Noble Park and Frankston attended.
