UPDATE 1.30pm:  Fire investigators are no longer treating the fire at a Dandenong court house as suspicious.

The fire is believed to have started in an air conditioning unit.

EARLIER: Firefighters have worked to quickly bring a fire at a Dandenong court house under control this morning.

CFA crews responded to reports of smoke showing from Dandenong Drug Court on the corner of Foster and Langhorne Streets at 5.50am.

Dandenong Station Officer Sam Webb said firefighters began an external attack of the fire, which had spread through the roof space.

“Crews worked extremely efficiently to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes,” he said.

“The fire had travelled quite aggressively within the building."

The 20x30 metre single storey building has been significantly damaged.

No one was inside the building at the time.

A fire investigator will be on scene later today to help determine the cause.

The fire is being treated as suspicious.

Eight crews were in attendance from Dandenong, Frankston, Hallam and Rowville.
