Volunteers learn new pumping skills

Last Sunday, members from a number of brigades across Region 14 took part in a practical assessment of the Advanced Pumping Course.

Volunteers

Theory nights were based at Doreen Fire Station, where the general principles were taught in preparation for the practical assessment at Ivanhoe Grammar School.

The members demonstrated their skills using a pumper, pumper tanker, tanker and a collar tank.

Supplying water over a distance with single and twin lines of 64 calculating pressure loss and flow rates had the participants working together to achieve the desired outcome under realistic conditions.

The principles of water relay were reinforced, opening up new ideas on how to effectively manage moving water in the volumes required for firefighting.

The new theory and skills they have learned will be strengthened through ongoing training back at their brigades.

Congratulations to all concerned on making the day such a success.

Many thanks to Ivanhoe Grammar for the venue, District 14 Instructors and a number of volunteers who had recently completed the Pilot Advanced Pumping and Hydraulics Course who assisted with their expertise and time.
