Donating blood is more important than ever

CFA steps into first position as members continue to donate blood as part of the Emergency Services Blood Challenge.

Last year CFA took third position with members making an enormous 950 donations.

As we head into the final month of the challenge members have already made over 700 donations, will this year be the first win for CFA?

CFA won the VIC award 2016 missing out on the national win to NSW Police by 20 donations.

CFA District 14 Business Manager Tanya Bowen said she’d never donated blood before working for CFA.

“I’d never donated blood before; in fact I’m a total wuss with needles.

“I’m fiercely competitive though and when I heard about the challenge with our emergency services colleagues, I was determined to help us win,” Tanya added. “Saving lives is just the happy side effect.”

“Back in 2016, we ran a social media campaign and repeatedly emailed the District personnel and rallied for donors.

“We won the VIC award that year and the trophies were presented by the Red Cross to CFA at our office,” Tanya said. “I’ve been a regular donor since.

“I donated last Wednesday and I received a notification to say my blood had already been used at the Royal Melbourne Hospital,” Tanya added. “I think that’s the fastest ever.”

Tanya said she’s even more passionate this year due to COVID-19 potentially impacting regular donors from attending.

“It’s now more important than ever to get our blood pumping and help CFA save the most lives in this incredible challenge."
