Dryer likely cause of fire

CFA crews responded to a fire in a garage in the early this morning (13 July) in Grovedale.

Firefighters arrived at the Heyers Road home around 5.20am and had the fire under control within 15 minutes.

CFA District 7 Operations Officer Wayne Aylmer said the fire was possibly started by a dryer.

“As temperatures drop people begin to fire up their wood heaters, use clothes dryers and turn on electric blankets to stay warm, but they all can become a fire risk, particularly if they have been sitting unused for a period of time,” Mr Aylmer said.

“We would urge residents to clean the lint filter in their dryers and continue to do this after every use.”

Last year CFA firefighters attended more than 1600 preventable house fires in Victoria.

“Most fires in the home and can be prevented, which is why we’re asking people to have a good understanding of what causes fires and know how to prevent them,” Mr Aylmer said.

CFA crews from Belmont, Geelong and Grovedale attended the incident with police and ambulance.
