Engulfed Endeavour Hills house collapses

CFA firefighters are still at the scene of a three storey house fire in Endeavour Hills.

Crews were called to the fire at Gresham Close, which started in the garage, around 2.45pm today.

CFA District 8 Operations Officer Dave Ellams said the fire spread from a car to the garage and into the house.

“The owners have come home, parked in the garage and their car has caught fire,” Dave said.

“By the time they escaped the garage and made themselves safe, they called Triple Zero but the fire had already gutted the garage.

“When firefighters arrived, the fire had spread to the second floor and then the third floor of the house.”

Dave said around 60 per cent of the building, which was timber and brick with roof tiles, had collapsed.

“It was a terribly hard fire fight. Because the winds are high in this area of Endeavour Hills, the fire spread and pushed through the house very quickly.”

Around 25 firefighters battled the blaze which took around 45 minutes to bring under control. Because of the structural collapse, the fire was tackled from above, with an aerial pumper, which has an extendable ladder.

Eight crews attended from Dandenong, Frankston, Hallam and Narre Warren North.

An advice message has been issued warning the community about smoke in the area
