Epping house destroyed

A house without working smoke detectors has been destroyed by fire and another house damaged in Epping on Thursday morning.

CFA was called to attend the blaze on Davisson Street shortly after 8:30am.

District 14 Operations Officer Steven Pitcher said four CFA crews fought the blaze, along with MFB.

“Firefighters arrived to find the single-storey brick veneer home completely engulfed by flames,” he said.

“There were 10 people inside the home at the time, but luckily they’ve escaped without any injuries.”

Steven said it was concerning to discover the family home had no smoke alarms fitted.

“The simple fact is only working smoke alarms save lives,” he said.

“Whether you’re renting a property or own your own home, there’s no excuse to be without one.”

Crews had the fire under control within half an hour and a neighbouring property has also sustained damage.

Crews from Epping, Greenvale, South Morang and Wollert attended.

Fire investigators from CFA and Victoria Police will work to determine the cause.
