Epping mulch fire

CFA crews have extinguished a fire at a business on Cooper Street in Epping this morning which had engulfed a large pile of wood chips.

Crews were called to the job shortly after 6am with reports of smoke showing at a recycled timber and mulch business.

Craigieburn Senior Station Officer Ken Houston estimated the pile at 25 metres wide and 5 metres high in size, and around 100 tonne.

“It appears a very high temperate in the pile has caused it to ignite,” he said.

“Crews extinguished the outer area then pulled the pile apart to further contain the blaze, and that meant we were able to save most of it.”

The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes.

Thirteen trucks from CFA and MFB assisted due to a lack of reticulated water in the area.

Crews attended from Epping, Craigieburn, Greenvale, Yarrambat, Kal Kallo, Mernda, Plenty and Wollert.
