Renovations at Geelong City Fire Station are complete, with three extra bedrooms and improved office facilities, preparing the station for new recruits.
This marks an important milestone for the Growth Programs’ (Program 350), which involves employing 350 new career firefighters, appointing career staff to positions across Victoria, renovating fire stations, building new ones, and adding new appliances and equipment over the next four years.
Land & Building Services Program Manager Michael Lindstrom praised MKM Constructions for their hard work in completing the extension in a short timeframe to ensure the additional facilities were ready for 15 recruits to come on station by the end of June 2017.
“We started in late April and we finished mid-June, so it’s been a pretty tight program to accommodate the June recruit deployment,” Mr Lindstrom said.
“MKM Constructions has done a great job finishing these renovations, as have the staff who remained working on site while renovations were underway.”
Each bedroom has a king single bed, five wardrobes – one for a member of each of the four shifts - and an ensuite to share between two rooms.
Geelong is the first of 27 projects Land & Building Services will complete over the next four years, with major project planning continuing at Corio, Lara, Ballarat and Wodonga, as part of the Growth Programs.
“We’ve got some challenges including the process CFA is undergoing with Fire Services Reform, but every project always must manage challenges and change,” Michael said.
“We’re doing a lot of planning with a team of seven people working with a range of architects and other suppliers to continue with renovations and building new fire stations.”
Major renovations are currently underway in Warrnambool, Mildura and Wangaratta, which are on track to be completed in the coming months.
