Fire at Somerton timber facility

CFA and MFB are attending to a fire at a timber transfer station in Somerton.

Crews were called to the incident in Patullos Lane just off the Hume Highway at about 10.45am.

The fire is burning across an area of about 1,000 square metres and, although it's under control, emergency services are expected to be on scene for the next six to 12 hours.

CFA Incident Controller Steve Pitcher said while the fire was not posing any threat to surrounding communities, it was creating a lot of smoke.

“We are issuing advice to the community who can stay up to date with the latest warnings and information by visiting www.emergency.vic.gov.au,” he said.

“Fortunately everyone who was at the facility at the time managed to escape uninjured.”

CFA trucks from Craigieburn, Epping and Greenvale are on scene as well as MFB.

The cause of the fire is unknown and will be investigated at a later stage.
