Fire destroys Tongala home

Eleven CFA vehicles are responding to a house fire at Tongala (north-west of Kyabram) which started shortly after 3pm this afternoon (Wed 22 July) and was brought under control at 4.40pm.

The house was well alight when crews arrived, and was largely destroyed in the blaze.

Access to water presented a challenge to firefighters, who quickly called for more water-carrying tankers, including Kyabram’s specialist ‘big fill’ tanker, to attend. Trucks then assisted with conveying water to the scene.

Operations Officer Bryan Suckling crews had divided the fire into two sectors and were attacking the blaze from two sides of the property.

“Crews did an excellent job calling for more resources and managing the fire effectively,” he said.

Firefighters from Tongala, Kyabram, Echuca, Stanhope, Wyuna and Girrgarre brigades assisted with the fire fight.

Police and ambulance also attended, with police closing off Day Rd to traffic.

The cause of the fire is unknown and will be investigated.
