Firefighters join forces for a good cause

CFA and MFB firefighters are working up a sweat to help raise funds for The Royal Children’s Hospital 2015 Good Friday Appeal.

This year’s treadmill challenge run is being held today in the Bourke Street Mall.

Firefighters hope to run the distance from Melbourne to Bendigo on treadmills for 14 hours straight outside the Royal Arcade.

Their aim is to smash last year’s record of raising around $30,000.

CFA volunteer and event co-ordinator Christine Henderson said like CFA, the Good Friday Appeal relies on the generosity of thousands of volunteers.

“This has become an important tradition for both fire services,” she said.

“It is one of many ways fireys support the Good Friday Appeal to raise much needed funds for equipment and research for children with life-threatening illnesses.”

MFB Chief Officer Peter Rau, who ran the first two kilometres this morning, said the event was a great opportunity for the fire services to work together and support a good cause.

“The fitness fundraising challenge in the Bourke Street Mall has been running for six years and keeps getting bigger and better,” he said.

“All summer our fireys work together in serious situations, this is a fun event with an important outcome – raising money for the Good Friday Appeal.”

CFA and MFB members will also be out in force today and tomorrow rattling donation tins in the CBD and across the state for the Good Friday Appeal.

Tomorrow night, the total money raised by MFB and CFA as part of the Uncle Bob’s Club contribution, will be presented during the Seven Network telethon of the appeal.
