Firefighters have helped stop the spread of a house fire in Warragul which threatened neighbouring buildings, including a childcare centre.
CFA was called to Victoria Street around 11.30 this morning and found the single-storey weatherboard home engulfed by fire.
CFA Duty Officer Michael Cherry said a neighbouring childcare centre was also under threat.
“All children and staff were evacuated safely and assembled at a nearby primary school,” Mr Cherry said.
“Firefighters then worked for the next hour to bring the fire under control and stop it from spreading to properties either side.
“Crews have worked really well to protect neighbouring buildings considering the severity of the fire.”
The childcare centre and another neighbouring property received damage, while the house was destroyed.
Mr Cherry said a mother and two children were home at the time but were able to escape.
“The mother smelled smoke and saw flames, and then managed to get everyone safely outside.”
The fire is believed to have begun underneath the home.
A fire investigator is on scene to try to determine the cause, which is not being treated as suspicious.
Eleven crews attended from Warragul, Traralgon, Longwarry, Drouin, Trafalgar, Yarragon and Bunyip.
