A working smoke alarm has alerted a family of four to a fire in their Merrigum home overnight.
CFA crews were called to the single storey weatherboard home on Waverley Avenue shortly before 8pm.
CFA District 22 Operations Officer Justin Dally said the family had working smoke alarms in their home which were sounding when crews arrived.
“Firefighters have done a fantastic job to contain the fire to the front bedroom although the fire did extend to the roof space as well,” Mr Dally said.
“There is also some smoke damage to the rest of the house.”
Two adults were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Victoria police and council worked to find emergency accommodation for the family.
Mr Dally said the fire highlighted the importance of having working smoke alarms.
“Parents should give their kids a hug and check their smoke alarms are working. Smoke alarms save lives.”
Three trucks from Kyabram and Merrigum attended.
The cause of the fire will be investigated; but investigators are looking into a heater in a bedroom as a possible cause.
