Flowerdale fire controlled

A small grassfire on Whittlesea-Yea Road in Flowerdale has been contained thanks to quick work by fire crews.

Crews were called to the fast-moving three-hectare fire at around 4pm on 19 February. A total of 17 trucks and air support battled the fire for 50 minutes before it was brought under control just before 5pm.

At the peak of the fire, a Watch and Act message was issued for nearby residents.

CFA Operations Officer Justin Dally praised the efforts of CFA and DELWP crews.

“It was a great multi-agency effort from CFA and DELWP firefighters supported by aircraft to get this fire under control quickly.

“We believe the fire was heading towards the bush before it was brought under control.”

The Watch and Act message has now been downgraded, however CFA is advising motorists to take extra caution as crews will be active in the area well into the evening.

Smoke may still be visible from nearby communities and roads.

The cause is unknown as this stage but will be investigated.

Brigades from Glenburn, Strath Reedy, Tallarook, Flowerdale, Trawool, Homewood, Molesworth, Whanregarwen, Kinglake West, Yarck, Yea, Limestone and Murrindindi attended.
