Free trauma app to assist burns assessment

A new app developed by the NSW Institute of Trauma and Injury Management (ITIM)  in collaboration with leading Australian burns specialists could prove a useful tool for emergency service personnel and first responders in Victoria.

The NSW (ITIM), an institute within the NSW Agency for clinical Innovation, launched the clinical support tool this year to assist in caring for patients with traumatic injuries from the initial resuscitation, to stabilisation and transfer to hospital.

The free app called ITIM NSW Trauma app, is available on iOS and Android platforms. There are a number of resources, checklists and guidelines included in the app.

It is hoped that the tool will assist in the assessment and calculation of total burn surface area (TBSA) in patients who have suffered burns, using the specific interactive burn calculator. This is one area that can be easily under or over- estimated however with the help of the App, it should go a long way in improving this for first responders.

The NSW ITIM worked closely with the NSW Burn Injury Network to provide specific guidelines, checklists and resources associated with burn injuries.

As the App was developed in NSW it is hoped that further improvements will be made to include information from other states. Feedback can be sent to the email address listed on the contact page.
